Chiropractic Austin TX Ergonomic Tips For Back To School

Summer will soon give way to fall and kids will be back in some version of school. It will be quite different as many kids will be learning from home, at least for some time. So, parents will be in charge of setting up the classroom. Take in a deep breath and let’s figure this out together. Kids take their cues from parents, so if you are positive and confident, they will be too.

Try to create two different areas, one for studying and tutoring, and one for crafts and projects. The study area can be a standard desk or a kitchen table. Involve your kids in the process so they are able to connect and get excited about the new reality. Work with what you have available. The goal is to create the most ideal environment for optimal focus and to minimize stress.

Ergonomics

Kids will be learning from screens, so the size of the screen and your child’s posture is extremely important. Ideally, a decent-sized monitor is best. The picture will be larger, so your child will be more engaged with teachers and other students. The top of the monitor should be at the top of the child’s head so that their eyes are at mid-screen. This is very important to avoid Forward Head Posture and the dreaded Text Neck. If your child will be using a tablet or laptop, you might need to use a stand, a stack of books, or a box to elevate the device to eye level. Good posture enhances learning and kids are happier with the process. If possible, a standing work station helps kids concentrate, especially those with high energy. If they are seated, make sure that the chair allows their feet to be flat on the floor, and their low back is supported. If there is background noise from other people and activities in the house, kids might need a headset to help them focus. In fact, this might be beneficial to all who are working and studying at the same time.

To fill the gaps in socialization, it might help your child to do schoolwork with friends over FaceTime or Zoom. Schedule weekly homework dates or study dates to stay connected with classmates and friends.

Things To Do Now

  • Increase kids’ activities. The more active children are in the summer, the more ready they will be for the school year. Biking or walking as a family is fun and easy.
  • Start getting back on the school schedule. This means returning to normal bedtimes and getting up earlier. They’ll be used to it and ready to learn.
  • Bring your kids in for a Chiropractic Check-Up to make sure they have healthy spinal alignment and are ready to learn!
