Chiropractic care is not a cure or a treatment for anxiety or depression. Yet many people find that depression and anxiety improve, and sometimes resolve while receiving chiropractic adjustments. Sometimes, this happens early in their care, but more often occurs over a period of time. When a spine is subluxated (misaligned), it causes pain only about 1/3 of the time. The majority of “silent” subluxations can cause massive problems in brain function. These subluxations cause emotional pain.
There are approximately 100 joints within the spinal column, and when they move freely, they act as a giant windmill, generating energy to fuel the brain. The normal, healthy spinal motion of these joints stimulates the brain and helps it produce serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, and endorphins. These are the happy hormones the brain requires and are essential for all-around good health-mentally, physically, and spiritually.
Chiropractic adjustments have a direct effect on the brain by interrupting the stress response. When the subluxation is corrected, it stops the negative stress hormones, Cortisol and Adrenalin, from flooding the body. The adjustment resets the chemistry of the brain and re-allocates blood flow back to the areas of the body that need it. This reset allows the beneficial Serotonin, Dopamine, Oxytocin, and Endorphin to be released. The frontal cortex is also able to function at optimal so you have increased cognitive function and then because Cortisol and Adrenalin are not elevated, your mood, memory, learning, gastrointestinal and immune function work better.
Every single adjustment recalibrates the brain to do what it should be doing. This is why people who are under regular chiropractic care tend to have a happier state of mind. They handle stress better. They concentrate and learn better. They even undergo surprising positive personality changes. A chiropractic adjustment is so much more than getting rid of the pain. That’s the easy part. The long real long-term benefits of regular chiropractic care are better brain function, better moods, healthier immune system, and overall higher quality of life.
